Student USI

What is a USI – Why do I need one?

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

From 1 January 2015, all students undertaking nationally recognised VET training in Australia are required to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). This includes Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma courses. Your USI is free, lasts for life, and gives you a single online record of all your vocational education and training outcomes across every provider you study with.

Without a verified USI, we are legally unable to issue your Statement of Attainment or Qualification — so getting this sorted early is important.

USI: One ID for Life

Your USI is your lifelong record of every VET qualification you’ve ever earned in Australia — create yours free in under five minutes.

We Can Help You Apply

Prefer support? Our team can apply for your USI on your behalf — your consent is captured as part of your enrolment form, so no extra steps are needed.

Option 1 — Create your own USI

It takes about five minutes. You’ll need one form of valid ID (passport, driver’s licence, Medicare card, or birth certificate).

Option 2 — Let us do it for you

We can apply for your USI on your behalf. As a registered training organisation, AIHM is authorised to create and verify USIs for our students — we do not need you to log into the USI portal or grant access manually. All we need is your written consent and the required identification details.

Your consent is captured as part of your pre-enrolment documentation. Once you have signed and returned your enrolment form, our admissions team has everything they need to act on your behalf.

A note on privacy

In applying for or verifying your USI, AIHM will collect and provide to the Student Identifiers Registrar the following personal information: your full name, date of birth, place of birth, country of birth, gender, and contact details. This information is used solely for the purpose of obtaining your USI and is handled in accordance with the Student Identifiers Act 2014 and the Privacy Act 1988. We will securely destroy any personal information collected solely for this purpose once your USI has been obtained.
