RPL & Credit Transfer

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) & Credit Transfer

AIHM recognises your previous study, skills and experience—so you can fast-track your training journey.

At the Australian Institute of Hospitality and Management (AIHM), we support flexible pathways to qualification. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT) give students the opportunity to gain credit for relevant skills, experience, or past study—helping to reduce both course duration and tuition costs where eligible.

Whether you’ve completed units at another Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or have significant industry experience, you may be able to apply for exemptions through a formal application process. These processes are guided by the Standards for RTOs 2025, the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), and the National Code 2018.

Successful RPL or CT may result in shorter study timeframes, which are reported to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) and may impact your student visa. Applications should be made before commencing your studies to ensure any adjustments to your schedule or fees are appropriately reflected in your Letter of Offer and Confirmation of Enrolment.

Apply for Credit Transfer

Use your previous formal qualifications from another Australian RTO to receive credit for identical or equivalent units.

Recognise Prior Learning (RPL)

Convert relevant work or life experience into academic credit—based on skills, knowledge, and evidence.

How the Process Works

RPL
Students applying for RPL must complete an Application for Recognition Form and provide supporting evidence such as resumes, job descriptions, reference letters, or certificates. A meeting will be arranged to assess your evidence, and you’ll be notified of the outcome in writing within 10–15 working days.

Credit Transfer
Students can apply for CT by submitting a Recognition Form with verified copies of AQF qualifications or Statements of Attainment from another RTO. This should be done prior to starting the relevant course/unit. If granted, you will not be required to re-enrol in those units.

Important Notes for International Students

  • You must maintain a full-time study load of 20 hours per week. If RPL or CT shortens your course, AIHM will help you adjust your study plan to meet visa conditions.

  • Any change to your course duration is reported to the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) via PRISMS.

  • If credit is granted before visa approval, it will appear on your CoE. If granted after, your updated course length will be communicated separately.
